Grief Right Now

In the Harvard Business Review, there was a recent article by Scott Berinato entitled That Discomfort You’re Feeling Is Grief. The article compares the emotions that so many Americans are feeling right now to the stages of grief.

  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Sadness
  • Acceptance

These steps, which do not have to be experienced in order, describe how our students are feeling. Grieving does not have to mean the loss of a loved one, even though that is definitely a reason for pure grief. People can go through the process of grief when any type of loss is experienced. Our teenagers are feeling a great sense of loss, and it is important that we help them cope with the emotions from the loss.

As explained in the article, here are a few techniques to help people handle grief in a healthy manner.

  • Focus on rational thoughts
  • Try grounding exercises
  • Control the controllables
  • Practice patience
