Getting Ready for School

MAGNUS HEALTH

Brentwood Academy uses the Magnus Health Software/App to maintain student health forms and medical information. Updated records are required for each school year and allow students to participate in BA’s physical education and sports programs. When logging into Veracross at the end of June/early July you will be able to sign in to the Magnus Portal, found in the toolbar and links directly to student health information.

Complete the health tracker and upload any required material prior to July 24, 2024. TSSAA requires all pre-participation physicals to be dated/signed after April 15th of the incoming year. Doctor’s offices will have this form.

Please contact Kim Elliott with any questions.

WANT TO READ TOGETHER?

SIGN-UP FOR SUMMER READING ENRICHMENT WORKSHOPS

This summer, middle school English teachers Cara Sadler, Laura Gelfand, and Marci Moore will offer a four-day summer reading workshop for rising 6th and 7th grade students. During this time, students will read the book below and discuss it intensively.

As students read the book, they will work on specific reading skills to improve their comprehension. We will teach students how to: summarize, use context clues, identify main ideas, draw conclusions, analyze characters, and more. As we work on these skills we will develop students as critical thinkers, speakers, and writers.

During the first semester, students will be expected to demonstrate their knowledge of summer reading through writing and other assessments. The work we do this summer will be a valuable step toward a great start to the school year. Students who join the workshop will feel more prepared and confident as they build skills and complete one summer reading book in just four days!

The cost of the program is $125 and is non-refundable. Books and materials are included. Please be mindful of the book selection for each grade and ensure you sign up your student for the correct reading enrichment session.

SUMMER MATH ASSIGNMENTS

Without practice, students may lose new mathematical knowledge or see a decline in basic skills over the summer months. With consistent practice, students do not require as much review and can better connect new concepts with previously learned material. Therefore, summer math work is required for all middle school students.

Below are 2024-2025 requirements for summer math work based on your student's grade level.

For any questions concerning summer math work, please contact Bonnie Hall, Mathematics Department Chair.

GRADE 6

For students entering grade 6, to best prepare for math at Brentwood Academy, all incoming 6th-grade students are encouraged to work through the summer skills sharpener workbook. This workbook provides students with an opportunity to reinforce math concepts learned through the previous school year. We recommend students work three to four times a week in their workbooks throughout the summer. The workbook is $19; you may order by clicking the link below.

For students entering grades 9-12, there is no required summer work for all students. However, if a student has requested HONORS math and 1. was either not recommended for honors OR 2. took standard math the previous year, a packet, which your student should have received in assembly, is required and must be completed by June 30. VISION SCREENING

As a service to all incoming students, we provide evaluations of visual skills that are not often assessed in a routine vision exam but are important for reading and processing.

These evaluations will take place June 26 & July 31 (8:30 AM-2:00 PM) in the downstairs study hall.

Evaluations, which take about 15 minutes, will identify areas where visual skills can be strengthened, thus increasing the opportunity for academic success. Please use the below link to sign up for a vision screening.
